too complicated to meet the majority of user requirements  without direct     IT assistance. This  coupled  with invariably a high price tag and significant professional    services makes    this an    expensive option in   both time and money.Research shows that users prefer a facility with which  they  have  become   comfortable  over  a  period  of  time, a tool  which   provides all functions for the "so what if processing" while  not   requiring  the user   having to learn  a new programming   language. With Microsoft being available at 95%  of  the   worlds   desktops   the    obvious     users    choice  is     Microsoft Excel. Too   many   software  providers  insist  on   using  proprietary   management   reporting   tools,    which  are  generally  limiting  in  function   and     formatting/design.  If   they   provide downloads to Microsoft Excel at all then the report has to be transferred in its entirety, which is very limiting.

In an ideal world what is required is simply the ability to choose the data to extract from   the corporate   database    and transfer that information directly to Microsoft Excel. We listen to the market and the result is an exciting new product known as "eXant eXporter".

eXant eXporter:

eXporter has been developed as an integral part  of the ERP   solution ‘eXant Classic’. Its    philosophy  is to utilise a favourite tool of 100,000’s of desktop users, the Microsoft Excel. Once developed it was quickly realised that it would be of immediate real benefit to users in any business environment. Our aim is to    enable   the user easy and flexible access to the existing system by empowering them with this tool without compromising the integrity, security and control.

eXant eXporter allows data to be extracted from the server exactly as you require and export to Microsoft Excel, MS Access, HTML, XML or ASCII(text). Any desktop user can use eXant eXporter to extract information from the corporate database to the   destination of his choice as mentioned above. The  simple  point  and  click  interface   provides  the  user  with  a natural, secured  interface   to corporate information.

eXant eXporter can connect to any corporate database which provides true ODBC access, including Microsoft SQL server, Oracle, DB/2, Sybase and many more. As well as having the facility to export the requested information after review to Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access, you just choose the destination.

eXant eXporter – What makes it different?.

The business      environment requires   mangers of today  to be on top of their business and access to secure and real information becomes critical in for analytical and decision making process. The eXant eXporter helps mangers of today achieve this very easily and at their pace. The eXant eXporter differs form certain products   or programs written especially for this purpose which require the users to have a "deep understanding   of the  structure  of the   database" from which they would require to extract the data. In such cases the user is presented with all the tables and fields in the database wherein the names of all such tables and fields have been written in a programming language. A user who     understands  the said programming language can only understand these "names". This is a major drawback/disadvantage for a non-technical user who would not understand the database names, let alone the structure.

With eXant eXporter we can overcome this and many such limitations with the user requiring zero programming skills to use this product.

eXant eXporter creates a dictionary to limit the amount of information displayed to the user. For example in a Financial application there are many different files for each customers’ total data like the customer master file, the customer locations file, the transaction file, the credit limit file and so on. With the dictionary we can ensure that the user is allowed access to the correct customer file and using the facilities of the dictionary, we call it the Customer Name and Address file. We can also determine which columns/fields the user will have access to. For instance we can give the user access to the name and address file and locations file and allow them to see names and address, locations, etc. but exclude the fields like Collateral offered, credit department notes and so on from the dictionary therefore the user will not be able to retrieve that information.

Since we only allow access to the corporate database via the dictionary we provide the highest level of Security and Control required by an organization.

We can also rename the tables and fields for each user (dictionary) without changing the underlying database, and get rid of the " Technical jargon" in place thereby enhancing the ease of use of the product. Hence eXporter is a powerful combination of "ease of Use" and "security".

The eXporter creates a bridge between your database and your desktop.

 Feature summary:

  • User creation – Creating users by the System administrator is very user friendly and easy.
  • Dictionary - The ability to have user specific dictionaries where only the tables and fields/columns that the user wants/has to be given are displayed makes it possible to restrict the information that each user has access to.

These tables and fields can be given user defined meaningful names, which need not be the system names for the tables and fields/columns. Also the user can toggle between system names and user names for the tables and fields/columns thereby working in a "zero programming environment".

Also the user can within each dictionary assigned to him, define his own favourites and see either his favourites or all the tables.

  • Dictionary Security/Assignment – The dictionaries can be assigned to specific users with a simple click function.
  • Dictionary Amendment – The system administrator as and when required could give amend or modify existing dictionaries. This eliminates creating new dictionaries if either more table access rights are granted to the user or the user needs to add/remove existing tables/fields from the existing dictionaries.
  • Ease of use - Considering the complexity of what it delivers, the ease of use is excellent for any user with enough knowledge of tables in databases.
  • Filter - The simplicity of specifying the criterion for selection of records based on multiple selection criteria is another feature that makes it easy to use. The user can define the selection criteria and then at "run time" modify the values for the same.
  • Variables: The tool offers the facility of system variables and user defined variables, which makes the extraction process more users friendly and the extracted data more meaningful. This for e.g. in a report writing tool like Crystal Report would require the user to have some skills in Visual Basic Programming.
  • Output - Currently the eXporter exports the output to MS Excel, MS Access, HTML, XML and ASCII text. The user can choose any one or all as the output destinations.
  • eXport Processes (EPs) -The ability to have "user-defined" eXport Processes (EPs) and "save" the same for later "Runs" by the same user or another user with the access/ designing rights makes it flexible and secure.
  • eXport Processes (EPs) Security/Assignment – The eXport Processes (EPs) as defined can be made at the Corporate level and various users can be given appropriate authority to use the same.
  • Collection - the ability to define batches of predefined eXportables is something that is unique as well as very powerful. Each user can define as many Collections as are required. This makes it a very powerful reporting tool for a user who may define his collections for various things like "Daily Activities", Weekly Activities" and so on.
  • Scheduler - the ability to schedule collection of EPs makes it easy for the user to always have the live/real data up to a specific point in time of his choice. This way the user can have predefined EPs and collections run with the necessary run time variables in un-attended mode to provide him with the necessary real time data. Also scheduling collections to run at low load times can reduce the load on the server.
  • Management Console – A user friendly Management Console gives the following functionality:
    • Export Dictionary – A dictionary can be exported to a user-defined location for giving it to another user or for backup purposes.
    • Import Dictionary - A dictionary can be imported from a user-defined location for taking it from another user or for restoring a backup.
    • Export EP – An EP can be exported to a user-defined location for giving it to another user or for backup purposes.
    • Import EP – An EP can be imported from a user-defined location for taking it from another user or for restoring a backup.
    • Export collection – A collection can be exported to a user-defined location for giving it to another user or for backup purposes.
    • Import collection - A collection can be imported from a user-defined location for taking it from another user or for restoring a backup.
